Temporary Exhibition, Pergamonmuseum, Berlin
During the spring of 2007, part of the Pergamonmuseum hosted a special temporary exhibition titled “The Splendor of Heaven: Greek Icons from the Velimezis Collection.” This presentation brought to Berlin one of the most significant collections of Post-Byzantine ecclesiastical icons, drawn from the renowned Velimezis Collection of the Benaki Museum.
The exhibition showcased masterpieces spanning the 15th to 19th centuries, offering a rare opportunity to explore the artistic evolution of Greek iconography after the fall of Constantinople. Through carefully curated works—ranging from devotional images to richly symbolic representations of saints and sacred narratives—the display illuminated the aesthetic, theological, and cultural significance of Greek Orthodox sacred art.
Accompanied by expert curatorial texts and scholarly interpretation, the exhibition highlighted how these icons reflect both continuity and transformation in post-Byzantine visual culture, tracing connections between tradition, artistic innovation, and the role of sacred imagery in Greek cultural memory.
